On December 12, 2012, The Immigrant Law Center hosted Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and immigration reform activist Jose Vargas at the Riverview Theater. The former Washington Post reporter told his story as an undocumented immigrant—from discovering that his green card had been forged at age 16 to calling the Department of Homeland Security last year and asking why he had not been deported after ‘coming out’ as an illegal migrant in a New York Times editorial—and shared the stage with local migrants seeking relief from deportation through Deferred Action petitions.
Vargas’ appearance inspired thoughtful articles from both the Star Tribune and MPR which illuminate the complex position of immigrants who were brought to the US illegally as children. MPR also featured Irma, a migrant from the ILCM panel seeking Deferred Action, in this video segment.
