Happy Pride Month
Posted on Jun 30 2020
“Happy Pride month! I am a queer woman and an attorney at ILCM. In my lifetime, Pride has transformed from a protest to a celebration/commemoration of the fight for LGBTQ liberation. This year, it returned to a protest, rightfully centering transgender members of our community, especially trans women of color. I am grateful to those who came before me, especially Sylvia Rivera, Martha P. Johnson, and the other BIPOC trans women who led those earlier protests. Their hard work, vision, and sacrifice has made it possible for me to safely live openly and true to myself.
“This month has been focused on protests demanding that Black lives be protected. I am grateful to the Black youth and Black women organizers who have led this uprising against police brutality and the systems of white supremacy, and I stand with them. And hopefully, Black Lives Matter will be able to transform into a celebration.
“It is my privilege to work with Black immigrants, and LGBTQ immigrants every day. My liberation is bound up with these neighbors of mine, and by working together, we can build a better world.” – Mary Georgevich
