Report: Failing Our Liberian Neighbors
Posted on Jun 30 2020
It is unacceptable that USCIS has failed to approve a single application or conduct meaningful outreach to the Liberian community.
- There are 10,300 individuals who are potentially eligible for relief under LRIF, over twice as much as the oft-used number of 4,000, according to the Center for Migration Studies.
- Approximately 1,177 Liberians or about 12 percent of eligible individuals applied for LRIF in the first four months of LRIF’s existence.
- Four months into the program, USCIS has not approved a single application.
- The majority of applicants are residents of Minnesota (18 percent) and Pennsylvania (16 percent), followed by Maryland (9 percent).
- Congress should extend the December 20, 2020, deadline for at least an additional year to ensure that all eligible Liberians are able to apply for relief.
